Dragon boat racing has been a school sport since 2006. Snowny Mountain Grammar School (SMGS) in Jindabyne is one of the first schools to have a dragon boat racing team actively compete in NSW.
In 2007, female paddlers from SMGS competed as part of the Australian Women Junior Team (combined with juniors from Blackwattle Bay Dragon Boat Club) and brought home two silver medals in the Junior Women Division at the 9th World Dragon Boat Racing Championship.
To date, NSW has quite a few schools actively participating in dragon boat racing and has become a part of their regular sporting activities. Each year, these schools compete at the high profile Chinese New Year regatta held at Darling Harbour.
Dragon boat racing is also a recognised Duke of Edinburgh activty. Students who particiapte regularly in dragon boat racing can credit their participation toward their Bronze, Silver or Gold Duke of Edinburgh award.
