DSA at Rhodes Dragon Boat Festival

08 - 09 July 2023

DSA took part in the two-day Dragon Boat Festival in Rhodes, and what an amazing weekend it turned out to be.

It was a fantastic event with something for everyone including live music, food, dance performances, kid's workshops and demonstration dragon boat races in the bay. Much to the delight for the kids (and us big kids), there were also land racess using inflatable dragons. Though we had a string start, and aced those turns. DSA sadly got pipped in the final for the gold metal, but we'll come back stronger next year.

Intrigued by the strange looking "rowing machine" and the beat of the drum, people from all walks of life - from curious kids and daring grandparents, to runners, gym-goers and seasoned canoeists - dropped by our stall to learn about the sport and give paddle erg a go. Locals who had never paddled before relished the chance to jump on and get a feel for it, wiith many surprised at just how difficult it was.

We had a blast getting out into the community to promote the club to local residents and introduce them to the amazing sport of dragon boat racing.

A big thank you to all who were invloved in organising the event, including Rhodes Multicultural Community Association and TM Media, and the City of Canada Bay who supported the event.

Kalang River Classic

26 March 2023

The Kalang River Dragon Boat Club hosted the 2023 Kalang River Classic on Sunday March 12. The event is a race for all types of paddling craft and is held bi-annually on the beautiful Kalang River at Urunga. The race covers a challenging and picturesque 14.5km. circuit around Newry Island for dragon boats, outriggers, kayaks and surf skis with a shorter 1 km. course for stand-up paddle boards and canoes.

This year the race event attracted over 140 paddling participants who travelled from as far south as Maitland and from Currumbin in the north as well as Tamworth, Taree, Port Macquarie, Camden Haven, South West Rocks and Coffs Harbour and included sporting teams, hobby enthusiasts and family members together to share the fun time on the water.

Amongst the mix of competitors were two combined dragon boat teams. First place went to the Bumblebees - members from the Manning and Camden Haven clubs resplendent in bright yellow and black and 2nd place to Kalang Rocks the South West Rocks/Kalang combined team. The 1st and 2nd place in the outrigger class was taken out by the Coffs Harbour Outriggers followed by the Maroro team from Port Macquarie in 3rd place.

The organisers were proud to be able to hand over a generous donation of $2,000 to the Nambucca Marine Rescue group that looks after the Urunga waters. The funds will be used to purchase a public network safety radio. Donations were also made to the Urunga and Bellingen SES as a thank you for their services on the day.

The Kalang River Dragon Boat Club encourages other dragon boat club to plan to be part of the fun and action when the event takes place again in 2025.

DSA Celebrates 40th Anniversary with Gala Dinner

17 March 2023

Dragon Sports Association (DSA), one of the oldest dragon boating clubs in Australia, celebrated its 40th anniversary with a grand gala dinner on 25 February 2023, at the Doltone House Darling Island Wharf.

The evening was a momentous occasion for the club, with members, supporters, and distinguished guests from the community and sport.

Ms. Felix Hamilton, President of the Dragon Sports Association, expressed her gratitude to the members and supporters who have contributed to the success of the club over the years. She said, "DSA’s 40-year history is not a story of one entity, but rather a living canvas upon which every individual has left their own unique mark, contributing to the ongoing narrative of DSA that will be passed on to generations to come. This celebration is a testament to everyone who was, has been, is and will be part of this amazing club, and the current Board of Directors. We also thank Dragon Boats NSW (DBNSW), Australian Dragon Boat Federation (AUSDBF) and the International Dragon Boat Federation (IDBF) for their continued support and all the great work that they do to shape the future of dragon-boating and provide clubs and individuals with hope and optimism to continue striving towards high performance and excellence.”

The evening featured a sumptuous banquet, live entertainment, and speeches by distinguished guests. Among them was Mayor Angelo Tsirekas, City of Canada Bay, who praised the club's commitment to promoting a healthy and active lifestyle through dragon boating.

The 40th anniversary dinner was a testament to the club's enduring legacy and the dedication of its members. The club's commitment to promoting the sport of dragon boating and fostering a strong sense of community among its members is a shining example of what can be achieved through sport.

On the night, DSA recognised the commitment, dedication, and loyalty of three individuals who have been instrumental to DSA's success. We thank them for their service.

George Louie - Long-Service Award

Ashur Barutha - Special Recognition Award

Jerry Krejcik - Legend Award and DSA Life Membership Recipient

Kalang Paddlers Clean Up The River

4 March 2023

The Kalang River Dragon Boat Club members sacrificed their usual training exercises to participate in the Clean-Up Australia campaign on Saturday March 4 by collecting rubbish along the river where they paddle each week.

Despite picture perfect conditions on the day with the river aquamarine in colour and looking crystal clear, there was still plenty of rubbish to be found along the river banks.  The team collected three large bags of rubbish much of which was plastic waste.

The club had two boats on the water including some new paddlers and were escorted by a playful group of dolphins diving around the boat as they paddled looking out for rubbish.

‘The stop/start paddling was a good exercise for the new paddlers and also our sweeps who did a sterling job of manoeuvring in and out of the inlets, under trees and other tricky spots,’ said club member, Beth Spriggs.

‘Our members were keen to be part of the clean up as the river is our playground and we want to keep it pollution free. It’s our way of giving back to nature and the Urunga community.’

Sussex Inlet Members Keeping Their Skills Sharp

  • Come and Try Day that attracted 12 newbies
  • 5 have signed up with DBNSW and our Club to date with more to be added.

Can’t wait to see what the rest of the year holds for our little Club on the South Coast.

Nambucca River Dragons looking for training boat

7 Sept 2022

Training in Macksville and Nambucca can only go ahead in a 10s boat at the moment, and that makes it hard when there are more that 10 paddlers keen to get on the water! Nambucca River Dragons 20s boat gave up after the last bout of flooding and is fully snapped in half! Paddlers are wondering if there's a club out there with an excess of boats who would like to donate one, or if they have a boat at very low cost to sell. They would be forever grateful!

Please if you have any ideas or are able to help. Email Tom McKenna on mast13153@gmail.com

  DEEPWATER LEARN TO PADDLE

10 April 2022

Deepwater Dragon Boat Club didn't quite see a fit for the Learn to Paddle program for them as they already had a social/beginner session every Sunday separate to their standard training, however they thought now at end of season they would give it a go purely from a marketing concept.

They had 30 paddlers show for their first session (they had to cap it) and have averaged around 20-22 returns for each session since.

It certainly provided a very positive interest and they intend to hold another early in the new season.
