Important: paddling buddies
- The practical water test cannot take place if insufficient volunteer paddling buddies are available.
- On-Water Testing requires a minimum of 16 paddlers (ie 16 paddlers + test candidate = 17). 18 paddlers preferred.
- All candidates must paddle (when not sweeping), unless advised prior to the session they are unable due to injury.
- Paddling buddies are expected to stay for the duration of the test, even if a sweep can’t paddle &/or disembarks.
- After confirming there are enough paddlers available to conduct the test, any ‘excess’ volunteers can be dismissed.
- If a club does not make available their quota of paddling buddies, or they leave, their sweeps may not be accredited.
Test Booking Information
A number of clubs have already contacted their regional / local sweep coordinator and expressed interest in putting forward trainee sweeps for testing. To assist with planning, the Sweep Coordinators require club officials to nominate Sweep Test Candidates for the August and September group tests.
- Candidates MUST be nominated by a Club Official.
- It is presumed that Test Candidate's are ‘Race Ready’.
- Sweep Logs must be presented, showing on-water time.

The test sessions generally follow this format.
- Roll Call and confirmation we have a 16 paddlers (minimum) to conduct water testing.
- The Written Test is conducted on-site, prior to the on-water practical assessment.
- Sweep Test briefing followed by On-Water Testing of individual candidates.
Note:
- A new Sweep Questionnaire will be distributed to Clubs (and test candidates) prior to the test dates.
- The questionnaire will need to be completed and returned to the sweep coordinator leading the session.
- Previous versions of the AusDBF or DBNSW questionnaire will not be accepted.
Written Test
The DBNSW Written Test will use the recently introduced AusDBF Sweep Accreditation Guidelines (version 2) as a reference for questions and answers, amongst other sources including (but not limited to) DBNSW Policies and Guidelines that have been distributed to clubs.
Sweep test candidates who are put forward as ‘Race Ready’ should also be aware of AusDBF & DBNSW Race Rules and Regulations. Sweeps should become familiar with NSW Maritime general boating information and marine safety policies and legislation - particularly those regulations affecting sweeps, such as boat lighting and minimum safety equipment requirements.
